Awake Again privacy policy

Last updated: 12 October 2026

1. Who we are

Awake Again is made by Chris Coughlan ("we", "us"), an independent developer in London. Contact details are in section 12.

2. What the app records

Awake Again records what you and the other carers tap, and nothing it works out for itself:

The app has no sensors of its own. It does not use location, contacts, photos, health data from the Health app, advertising identifiers or analytics.

3. Where it is kept

4. What we, the developer, can see

Nothing. The app sends nothing to us: there is no server of ours, no analytics, no crash reporting of our own and no advertising. Apple states that data in the private and shared databases is not visible to the app's developer: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/cloudkit/ckdatabase/scope/shared

If you take part in TestFlight testing, Apple shows us what TestFlight shows every developer, such as installs, sessions, crash reports and any feedback you choose to send, and, if you joined by email invitation, your name and email address. That comes from Apple's TestFlight service, not from the app.

5. Speech and summaries, on the device

The journal writes a recording down with Apple's on-device speech recognition, and the week summary and the journal's key points are written by Apple's on-device language model. The app asks only for the on-device model; it does not use Apple's Private Cloud Compute or any third-party AI service. The words that result are kept and shared as in section 3.

6. Why we can process it

We do not receive or hold any of your data, so there is no processing by us that needs a lawful basis.

Your own use is household use. UK GDPR does not apply to personal data processed in the course of a purely personal or household activity: https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/uk-gdpr-guidance-and-resources/exemptions/a-guide-to-the-data-protection-exemptions/. Parents keeping a log of their own baby's sleep, on their own devices and in their own iCloud, is, we think, that kind of activity. It would not cover, for example, a childminder or a sleep consultant using the app in their work.

We decide how the app stores and shares data, so we treat ourselves as responsible for those design choices: keeping data on your devices and in your iCloud, sharing only by invitation, and giving you export and delete.

7. Your baby's data

The app is for parents and carers. Your baby is the person the data is about, not a user of the app. We have considered the ICO's Children's code, and our assessment is that the app is not likely to be accessed by children: an infant cannot use it, and it is designed for adults.

8. Health information

We treat sleep, feeding and crying records, and journal notes, as information about your baby's health, and so as special category data. This is our judgement, made to be on the careful side. It stays with you and your iCloud, and we never receive it (sections 3 and 4).

9. How long it is kept

10. Exporting, deleting, and your rights

11. Apple as the iCloud provider

Your records are stored by Apple in iCloud, under your Apple Account and Apple's own terms and privacy policy. Private data counts against your own iCloud storage. The app does not yet use CloudKit's end-to-end encrypted fields, so even with Advanced Data Protection on, do not rely on end-to-end encryption for these records today.

You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office: https://ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/

13. Changes

If what the app does with data changes, we will update this policy, change the date at the top, and say what changed in the app's release notes. A change that sends your data anywhere new will be explained in the app before it happens, and will not apply to your existing data without your agreement.

If you're worried about your baby, contact your health visitor or GP. In an emergency call 999.
